How To

How To Fly Drones For Beginners

A drone can be used to fly remotely controlled aircraft for photography, surveillance, scientific research, hobby and commercial purposes. Drone technology has existed since World War II. DJI's Phantom quadcopters became commercially available in 2010. Many types of drones have been made available since then, from beginner-friendly models such as the Parrot AR Drone 2.0, to high-end multi-rotor craft such as the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are many ways to fly a drone.

  1. Remote control – This technique uses a control device attached directly to your hands that allows you steer the drone around its flight path. There are two types of controllers available: joysticks and on/off switches.
  2. Manual Control- This allows you to control your drone remotely via GPS coordinates. The app will provide instructions and help you to locate the drone.
  3. Autonomous Flight - This method involves leaving the piloting duties to the drone itself. It allows the drone to fly independently without any human intervention. A drone must have a builtin camera and sensors capable to capture images and other data.
  4. Triggered Flight - This method is similar to manual control, except the pilot manually sets up a preprogrammed route, and the drone follows that route until it reaches the endpoint. Once the programmed route is completed, the drone lands automatically and returns back to the base.
  5. Landing Gear- Some drones include landing gear that allows for safe landing if the power goes out or they run out of batteries.
  6. Goggles - Pilots may wear goggles to shield themselves from flying debris.
  7. Camera - You can capture photos and videos with your drone from the air.
  8. Obstacles-Some drones come with obstacle avoidance devices that keep them from hitting obstructions.
  9. Speed - Drones can reach speeds up to 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life – Most drones will last 20 minutes to three hours depending on how powerful they are.
  11. Range - Depending on the model, some drones can travel up to 30 miles away.
  12. Power source - Some drones require an external power source; others work off internal batteries.
  13. Weight - Some drones have a weight of less than 1 pound and others weigh 4 lbs.
  14. Size - The size of drones varies from small, easily carried devices to more substantial crafts that weigh in excess of 50 pounds.
  15. Price – All drones fall into a price category. These range from expensive models that cost thousands to affordable options that start at 100 dollars.
